The main parts of Medicare
Medicare is commonly discussed in parts. Original Medicare includes Part A and Part B. Some people also choose a Medicare Advantage plan, a stand-alone prescription drug plan, or Medicare Supplement insurance depending on eligibility and needs.

| Part C / Medicare Advantage | An alternative way to receive Medicare benefits through private insurance companies approved by Medicare. |
| Part D | Prescription drug coverage offered through private insurance companies approved by Medicare. |
| Medicare Supplement / Medigap | Private insurance that may help pay certain out-of-pocket costs with Original Medicare. |

Questions to ask before comparing plans
- Are your doctors and preferred hospitals in network?
- Are your prescriptions covered, and at what tier?
- What are the premium, deductible, copays, coinsurance, and out-of-pocket maximum?
- Do you travel frequently or live in more than one state during the year?
- Do you qualify for Medicaid, Extra Help, or other assistance programs?
